Direct Pathway Agreement with Education

Each year, the Department of Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Science, will provide the Faculty of Education with qualified graduates from its programs.

To qualify for direct pathway to the Initial Teacher Education Program, applicants must meet the Admission Requirements for the Initial Teacher Education Program, Intermediate/Senior Physics

  • Applicants must complete their programs of study by August 31 of the year in which they plan to begin the Initial Teacher Education program. Degrees must be conferred no later than the fall of year one of the Initial Teacher Education program. Students completing Honours Specialization, Specialization, or Major modules offered by the Departments of Physics and Astronomy are eligible.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed the equivalent of 10 full university courses at the time of application. Transfer credits from community colleges and CEGEP will not be accepted.
  • Applicants must have a minimum average of 75% in their best 10 full undergraduate courses (or the equivalent) as well as a minimum average of 75% in their best 5 full undergraduate Physics courses (or the equivalent). Courses taken in the year of application cannot be included in the calculation of the overall average or the Physics course average but will be counted in support of program
  • All Physics and Astronomy courses numbered 1000 and higher are eligible to be included.
  • Applicants must also have completed the equivalent of at least 3 full courses, with a weighted average of 70%, to support a second teaching subject. The following second teaching subjects are expected* to be available: Economics, English, Environmental Science, Family Studies, French, Geography, History, Law, Mathematics, Music(Instrumental), Music(Vocal), Philosophy, Political Science, Biology, Chemistry, General Science, Social Science, and Religious Education (note that for either French or Religious Education as a second teaching subject, the equivalent of 5 full undergraduate courses is required).
  • Applicants who wish to include Mathematics as a second teaching subject (most Physics & Astronomy modules include sufficient mathematics coursework) please note that any course with a Numerical and Mathematical Methods, Math or Applied Math prefix numbered 1000 and up are eligible courses for Second Teachable in Mathematics 
  • Applicants must successfully complete EDUC 2200 Perspectives on Schooling. (This course may be in progress at the time of Initial Teacher Education application, but must be completed before the Initial Teacher Education Program begins.
  • To be eligible for admission, all applicants must complete the CASPer assessment and achieve a minimum z-score of -1.5.In addition to applying through their Faculty/Department for the Direct Pathway, students must also apply directly to the Initial Teacher Education Program at Western

 

If you wish to be considered for direct pathway to the Initial Teacher Education Program via the Department of Phsyics and Astronomy, please send an official transcript and the subject of your second teachable to Jennifer Tilston, jennifer.tilston@uwo.ca by September 30 of the last year of your BSc degree studies.
