Boson Star formation in a gravitational collapse and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

Supervisor: Dr. Alex Buchel

Project Description (Abstract):

LIGO detected gravitational waves (GW) from binary black hole mergers and from the merger of neutron stars. Are there other compact objects, made from the exotic matter, that could have potential observation GW signature? This project focuses on using techniques of numerical General Relativity to explore formation of so-called  ‘boson stars’ in a gravitational collapse of a complex scalar field. A complex scalar field has a natural U(1) symmetry, which according to String Theory Weak Gravity Conjecture must be gauged - in other words there must be associate exotic ‘electromagnetism’ (EEM). The project involves study the effect of EEM on boson star formation.
